Tackling the issue of speeding vehicles in our community is a critical and ongoing challenge.
Motorists who speed through residential neighbourhoods are very often unaware of the impact their actions have on local residents, or the danger they pose to other road users and pedestrians. This is something we are working closely with Avon & Somerset Constabulary and Local Authorities to address.
Speed Watch is a proactive solution to improve the safety and quality of life for everyone in the community, and gives local people the ability to actively get involved in road safety.
This locally driven initiative aims to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding and the nuisance it causes in the community where they offend, but that does not exclude the possibility of direct Police involvement if the message is not fully understood.
Local residents who are willing to volunteer a small amount of time, are trained to use speed indicator / detection devices. These volunteers carry out roadside checks and record; the vehicles speed, registration number, time & date of those exceeding the speed limit.
This information is submitted to Avon & Somerset Constabulary, who then interrogate the Police National Vehicle Database to check the information provided.
The registered owner of any vehicle exceeding the speed limit is sent a warning letter, explaining that speeding is unacceptable to the local community and that persistent offenders can expect further action by the Police.
